Amy’s Update
Winter 2005-2006
Dear friends and family,
How are you doing? I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Here is a bit to catch you up on what I’ve been up to this semester.
New Tribes Language Institute
This past semester has been a very challenging, yet good time. We took classes such as Phonetics, Grammar, and we had a Language Practicum. During the six weeks of Practicum we put to use some of the techniques that we had learned in other classes, to learn a language. I was assigned Thai. Thai is a very difficult tonal language. For example, there are twenty different ways to say cow (high, low) and they each mean a different thing. However, I survived six weeks of it, and I was able to use the techniques that we had learned. Also, I learned more about relying on God on a moment by moment basis. There were many early mornings, long days, and frequent headaches. Also, there were so many evenings when I would look at the schedule for the next day, and I would think there is no way I can do that. However, God was so faithful through these times and He would gently and consistently remind me to rely on Him, rest in Him, and allow Him to work in and through me. I was frequently shown that I didn’t have to worry about tomorrow. I just needed to finish today, and then He would give me the strength to deal with tomorrow when I needed it (and no sooner). Needless to say, though these were six of the hardest weeks of my life, they were six of the best weeks of my life, as they brought me closer to God.
Christmas Break
I had the wonderful privilege of coming home for Christmas Break. I am greatly enjoying spending time with my family. I was able to help my sister with some wedding preparations while she was here. Also, I had a friend from high school come visit for a day. I have been listing books to sell on the internet to make money for school. I have also been able to do some reading and other fun activities like going to the beach and Blue Springs Park.
I plan to continue on at New Tribes Language Institute, for another year as I signed up for the semester long Linguistics course. I would appreciate your prayers for future plans, finances, and that I would be diligent this next semester. Thank you so much for your prayers, support, and love. I really appreciate you.
